devotion 11-26-14

Good Morning! Here’s to a blessed Thanksgiving tomorrow – hoping your turkey is now thawing, your pumpkin pies baking! Have a good one!

Luke 4:1-13

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.’ 4Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “One does not live by bread alone.” ’

5 Then the devil* led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6And the devil* said to him, ‘To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.’ 8Jesus answered him, ‘It is written,
“Worship the Lord your God,
and serve only him.” ’

9 Then the devil* took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10for it is written,
“He will command his angels concerning you,
to protect you”,
11and
“On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.” ’
12Jesus answered him, ‘It is said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ 13When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

Jesus is Tempted

Jesus was baptized

in the Jordan –

and filled with the Spirit.

The Spirit led him

into the wilderness,

the desert,

a lonely place,

a dry and barren land.

We are tempted

in the dry and lonely places,

we seek other gods.

But Jesus is still with us

even there,

in the desert.

Jesus went

to fast and pray –

but the devil came,

in his hunger,

offered bread

and doubt –

“If you are Son of God”

a subtle twist,

if – then – why?

But Jesus says,

it takes more than bread

to feed my soul.

The devil thought,

all men are greedy –

I’ll use that.

But this one –

he wants to save mankind –

I’ll offer power,

authority

and he tells Jesus –

worship me –

and you will rule.

Make a deal

with the devil

and you can have it all –

but he is a tricky one,

you can lose your soul.

Jesus said no.

But the devil,

not done yet –

brought back doubt –

“If you are — prove it”

once and for all time

do this my way,

the world’s way,

and they will worship you.

Prove it!

And the devil –

he quotes scripture!

to tempt Jesus –

but Jesus responds

with scripture –

trust God.

And finally,

the devil went away –

and waited

for a better time

a time of vulnerability.

We need church,

we need community,

we need our loving God

when we are vulnerable –

to support us,

and love us,

and protect us –

for the devil waits.
